get ready for the New Year if it involves a sales tax change

We are just a little bit more then a month out from the new year. Do you live in an area where the sales taxes are increasing and you will need to program your SAM4s cash register or your Sharp register?

We do programming for cash registers over the phone for all commercial Sharp registers and all the SAM4s models. Don't wait to get in line for the tax change, call early and arrange for a technician to call you back and walk you through the process of changing the sales tax.

Keep in mind you will need you program key and a phone at the register. The program key for a SAM4s is a "P" key or a "C" key as they both will work. For a Sharp cash register is needs to be a "MA" key

To schedule call 1-800-863-2274 and there is a fee for this service. Here are some sites you can visit as well

Programming more than one cash register

This topic comes up often whenever people are shopping for cash registers and are trying to get the cheapest one they can. OK none of us wants to spend more money than needed right? Well before doing that figure out what is needed!

Perfect example of how this affects a business happened this morning at my office. A customer had called a couple weeks a go looking for five registers. The customer was very sure of the make and model they wanted and just wanted a price. Nothing more just price, price, and price! The customer was really sure this was the best machine for them and there was not going to be an opportunity to discuss anything else.

They bought the 5 registers and took delivery of them. This week the customer called for support to get started programming the registers, no problem we do that all the time. In discussing programming and set up with the end-user I quickly determined it was going to take 3 to 4 hours to program each machine. It take a very long time to enter the names of hundreds of items, prices for hundreds of items, make the custom keyboard etc etc. That is a lot of time 3 to 4 hours times 5 registers so now looking at 15 to 20 hours of your time programming cash registers.

If the time had been taken to discuss the other options we would have steered them to a register that has an SD card port so after programming one register the data could be transferred to another register within a matter of minutes! So now it would still be 4 to 4 hours programming the first register and maybe 30 minutes each for the other 4 including taking them out of the box as you can quickly replicate them rather than re-doing all the work!

So when buying more than one register where the program will be the same make sure you buy one with and SD card port, or an IRC feature, or PC software all of these features would allow you to clone the first programmed register. Also if you decided to use a Datacap Twin Tran to accomplish credit card interface with your cash registers IRC would allow you to share one interface rather than needing one per register.

Very few Sharp cash registers come with a SD card port or PC interface. Many more SAM4s cash registers have free utility software for programming and SD card ports in almost all newer models.

So if you save $50.00 a register is it worth 20 hours of your time? I doubt it is. Consult with us before you pull the trigger on buying your cash register to make certain you are at least presented with your choices and make an informed decision. 1-800-863-2274

Sharp Cash Registers

Sharp continues to make some of the best cashregister on the market today IF YOU BUY THE RIGHT ONES! Sharp makes two lines of cash registers. They make the XE line up which are sold through the big box stores like office depot, costco etc. beware of those machines they are not high quality and you will get zero support. If you bought one take it back and then buy a commercial grade machine from the ER or UP line which are only sold through dealers with a support staff.

Sharp Cash Registers

You will pay more for an ER model or UP model cash cash register but you can get help when your sales tax goes up or you need to add an item. The help may or may not be free but it will be available. We turn away people with XE registers almost every day don't let that happen to you!

Taxable discounts on a cash register?

Common question we get on Sharp Cash Registers and SAM4s Cash Registers is how to make the total sales taxable after the discount. So as an example the business owner wants the cash register to charge sales tax after a discount like this $10.00 sale with a 10% discount and you want to tax $9.00 not $10.00

So you program the discount key to be taxable YES TAXABLE that was it reverses the tax that would have been charged. So if you have a 10% tax the sales tax on $10.00 would be $1.00 but you apply a discount of 10% that is taxable the discount will be $1.10 so your gross sale will be $9.90

Hope that helps! Works the same rather discount is based on percentage or dollar amount.

Do you need a cash register manual

We get a ton of questions from people looking for cash register manuals. First off if you cash register is older the 8 years it is very un-likely there is a downloadable manual avauilable on-line. I know of registers still on the market today that does not have a downloadable manual available.

There is a site that offers free downloads for Cash Register manuals and they have quite a few available and other tools like keyboard templates and programming guides and tips.

What are the top cash registers of 2011

In 2011 I think SAM4s and Sharp Cash Registers will be the leaders of the pack much like 2010. Between the two I think SAM4s has the lead as being the best when you take Cost, Features, and options into account. SAM4s seems to be more agressive in bring new models and features to market. And just like 2010 in 2011 the best places to buy your new cash register remains the same

Please check back as I envsion some new models being released this year. Maybe not from Sharp but I expect big things from SAM4s again this year

Who makes the best Cash Registers

So we get this question often about who makes the best Cash Registers. There is no one easy answer. However if you break it down a little more there are some clear winners.

If you ask who makes the best entry level cash register that has some features but is easy to program then I would have the say the SAM4s ER-650 and ER-650R is the best register on the market. It sells for under $800.00 in most cases (unprogrammed) and it without a doubt the easiest machine I have ever seen to program and use. Check it out here along with some other Cash Registers

If you are looking for a high end cashregister with a lot of features it is hard to beat the Sharp line of cash registers. They have a high end line up of the UP-600, UP-700, the new UP-820F, UP-810, and the UP-820N. All great cash registers with lots of features. These are higher end registers that you may need help to program. So click the following link to check the Sharp line up out as well as other Cash Registers

Cash Register With Free Software

There are several Commercial Cash Registers available with Free Polling and Programming software. What is Polling and Programming Software you ask? Well Polling means that you can take reports from your cash register on your computer. So you Poll it! Programming is just what it sounds like, you can program the cash register with the software on your computer.

More often then not it is more trouble then it is worth to connect and use UNLESS you have lots of PLU's or UPC to program into the machine. In that case the software can save you hours of time programming. And one of the packgages allows you to import items which again can save you hours and hours!

Check out the following cash Registers that Integrate to a PC for Free
