Chances are if you don't know what Validation means then you don't need it! I'm shocked that still in 2025 we get calls from people looking to replace their SAM4s ER-5115II or Sharp ER-A320 that they used for validation of guest checks or invoices. Validation means you could insert a guest check or invoice into the cash register printer and press validate and the cash register would print the date, time, amount of the sale and the tender type on that paper you inserted into the printer. That was used to prove the guest check or invoice was paid for at the register. this is a holdover from about twenty or thirty years when it was really common, Its one of those things if you know, you know! 

Here is the problem with validating cash registers

Well there is a problem with validating cash registers today and its a big one. They are no longer made anywhere in the world that I'm aware of. The reason being is that all the manufactures switched to thermal printers which are faster, quiet and rarely break. The problem is thermal printers can't validate. So what is a person to do if they still need to validate? Well the answer is to buy a modern machine the the SAM4s ER-915 (that can't validate on its own) and add an option slip printer to it. With the optional slip printer you can still validate. the slip printer is a mechanical printer that uses an ink ribbon and a dot matrix printing system. There are two drawbacks, first it is about double the price of the old register when you combine the new register plus the slip printer, and second is the fact its two pieces of equipment so takes up more counter space. Although there are two methods the 630R can do age verification (AV) the best method is to use a 2D bar code scanner. You can enter the age manually if you would like, however when using a scanner you remove the human error element. These will be sold as either the F or R version.  The raised version has always been the more popular model for retail applications. SAM4s end-users often contact us wanting to know if their SAM4s cash register works with a Kitchen Video system (KVS). The answer of course is yes most of them do. If you really want to amp up the production level of your operation think about adding a KVS to your SAM4s POS system. Adding a KVS adds unbeatable workflow to your kitchen. There is a reason the big franchises have been using KVS for a long time. The information a KVS system provides you with will really tell you in real time how good your kitchen is.

The E-Pad KVS system is flexible allowing you to customize your system. For an example many operators will put a screen and bump box at the grill and another at the drive through window and often another at the drink or ice cream station.

Clearing out the PLU not found Buffer on the SAM4s SPS-520RT register

This is one of the most common calls we receive. My register errors that memory is full. Unless your registers memory allocation was not set up properly this is probably not true. What is happening in most cases is you are adding UPC items using the PLU not found feature which is a great way to add them.

The error is misleading in this case. the memory that is full is the buffer holding the not found PLU's you just added. The maximum amount is 100 regardless of the amount of memory your register has on board.

Watch the video and we explain how to reset the buffer and get you back on track. Of course if you are not using the PLU not found feature to assist the programming of new items it can really indicate the memory has been filled. Even if that is the case don't panic, we can solve most of those cases too. Important thing to do in that case is nothing until you have spoken to an expert. Backing up your SAM4s cash register Data

Most of the SAM4s cash registers on the market today can have their data backed up in several methods. If the model begins with SPS like for example the SAM4s SPS-2000 or SPS-520 the register can be backed up to a SD card, flash rom or computer. If the model begins with ER that there is a good chance that the register will have an SD card slot as well as a RS232 port to connect to a PC.

Almost all of the SAM4s cash registers sold in the last five years also come with free utility software that allows you to not only back up your register but program it too. That same software may also allow you to import files into the software for download into the register.

Sadly many cash register dealers won't give you the software when you buy the register. That is ridiculous as it is provided for free by SAM4s. If your dealer did not give you the software check out our resource page for the SAM4s cash register models and you may locate a free download of the software.

If not contact the dealer you bought it from and demand they give you the software. It cost them nothing and should have been included in the purchase.
