SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register

I really like the SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register and ER-650R Cash Register. The ER-650 is designed for restaurants the ER-650R for retail stores.

You will not find an easier cash register to program then the ER-650 or ER-650R register. The reason is the LCD display that makes programming and reporting on this machine menu driven. I have programmed this machine many times without opening a book. Just turn the key and follow the directions!

Lots of options also make this a popular machine. The ER-650 or ER-650R can have Barcode Scanning, Integrated Credit Card, Scale, PC Interface, Coin Changer, Kitchen Printer, Kitchen Video, and DVR interface. However this machine only comes with 2 serial ports and none can be added. So keep that in mind when looking at options.

A couple knocks on this model is that they can not share a kitchen printer, or credit card interface. So if you have three machines in your store and need Itegrated Credit Card you can indeed do that but you need three Datacaps (1 per machine) as with larger SAM4s registers can share 1 Datacap.

By the way the SAM4s ER-650 and ER-650R is the same as the Samsung ER-650 and ER-650R. Samung never made the machines just sold them. They were always made by SAM4s who now market directly.

Hi We have a small cafe and use the Samsung ER 650. I can't seem to figure out how to program it to track ticket/check #'s. We are unable to locate the "table" key, even on the default keyboard. Is there a special accessory we need for this function or can you help to figure this out? thanks for your help

Dave said...

OK, the ER-650 does that function very well. The table # button is not standard you will have to place it on the keyboard. You will also probably want a server#, and a Save Button as well.

These buttone are all added via programming. Look at page 110 in the manual

Also check out page 64 for check ops.

It is easy to do, however it is an advanced feature of the machine. You may want a little pro help. But check out those parts of the manual first and let me know.

Hi I have got this register second hand - looks impressive, but... when trying to program PLU's, the manual says the programming keyboard overlay will automatically be enabled if the cursor is on the DESC field - that does not seem to be the case... any idea what needs to happen? thanks

We owe a Samsung ER650 that has not been plugged up and in operation for several years. When we plugged it in the power came on and the front display shows several letters and symbols all out of order on the screen. We turned it off and the front display reads "function invalid, press clear". We did this but we are still not able to use the cash register. Please help us.

Dave said...

Sounds like you battery is dead. Most cash registers have batteries that keep the program and data in case of power failure. Most are designed for 30 to 90 days. If the batteries go dead in many cases your cashe register won't even know it's a cash register. Have them replaced and your machine will probably fire up and work.

Hi, I've bought a used ER650 for my retail store and have forgotten how to program it. All I need programmed is two keys, one for food and one for taxable items. I have the manual and all I get is beeps! I happen to be in Seattle and appreciate your help in advance.

Dave said...

Ken, would need more detail about It just beeps? What mode is the key in, does it display an error #?

With the key is R will it do a no-sale?

Has this machine been unplugged for an extended period of time?

Does it feed the paper?

So some more detail please and we will see what we can do.

Dave, We want to purchase the ER650, but my husband wants to make sure it can work with a Quicken program installed in our desktop. We noticed it had two ports and thought it could run straight to the desktop instead of using a card. Thanks for your direction

Dave said...

Yes, the 650 can interface to most of the Quickbooks packages. However not directly! You would need to interface your PC to the ER-650 with PC Poll first, and then interface PC Poll to QB with their pre-made interface! you can see pc poll at www.pcpoll.com

ive got a second hand er-650, im trying to retreive a z report but its asking me to enter REPORT# why is that???

Dave said...

The report # is the report you wish to run. That machine has many. It will display a list of them. If you need a manual we have them posted at http://www.cashregisterguys.com

Dave said...

Shehzad sorry for the long delay. It sounds as though you did not finish something you started in programming, or that you need to log in with a cashier # or even as simple as not having the drawer closed if you have that option on. Hope that helps with your SAM4s ER-650 register. Don't forget I have manuals posted on http://wcashregisterguys.com

I just bought 1 from you.

Have a quick question. This is for a Mexican Fastfood, the number of menu items is > 80.

On the old SamSung, i was able program a key with multiple PLU. So when the cahsier press SODA key, it'll popup a list of Coke, DietCoke, 7Up PLUs etc.. and he/she select one. This allowed to to squeeze many PLUs onto the keyboard.

Can I do something similar to the new the ER-650?

Tks

John

Dave said...

Hi John, yes the SAM4s ER-650 Cash register does something like that. It has its limits though. If I remember right the 650 can have 8 keys that can have a list of 8 items each. So yes you could have a soda key and when pressed it will display 8 items to choose from.

The ER-650 unlike some of the larger SAM4s registers like the SER-7000 or the SPS-500 series can not link window to window or modify items with windows.

Thanks

Dave

I am opening a new and small take out restaurant. I have two requirments that I need to fill. First is a kitchen printer. Looks like the 650 will do that. Second is reporting. I would like to be able to capture data like hourly reporting, item sales, etc. in a spreadsheet format (such as Excel)for statistical purposes. Reporting capabilities of the 650 are very unclear to me. I would really like to know what it can do "out of the box' without purchasing additional expensive software.

Dave said...

Well great questions on the SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register.

You asked "First is a kitchen printer." And you are correct no problem there. However remember that ER-650 registers can not share Kitchen Printers so if you need more then one machine you would need to look at another model.

You asked "I would like to be able to capture data like hourly reporting, item sales, etc. in a spreadsheet format (such as Excel)for statistical purposes." No easy answer there, yes the machine does hourly reports (gross sales) does by item reports, but no spreadsheet format until you connect to a PC. The PC does not really enhance much other then it prints the reports 8.5" by 11" instead of the 2.25" thermal printer on the cash register. This cash register will give reports by Group, Item, Media, Clerk, Hour, Tax, Voids, Discounts, Daily and Monthly for most.

You can see this machine at SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register

Stephen, the er-650 has a transaction buffer and 130 is the max, even with added memory that can not be expanded. Remember to also check out SAM4s Cash Register Support

You have to go back to program and finish. You may be able to just press the cash/enter key. If that does not work try in all mode just to see if maybe you started something in another mode. I think there is a manual posted at SAM4s Cash Registers

I have an ER-650 that doesn't print out nightly reports after a recent power outage. Everything else is working fine. Any ideas?

Anonymous said...

Hi Dave,

Just had one of my ER-650s begin to do the same thing as someones else above. The keyboard beeps but nothing changes on the display. I did a reboot in program mode, and now the register shows closed. I can not open it because when I press the clerk button it beeps but nothing is registering. I swapped a keyboard from another unit and had the same result, so it is not a keyboard issue. Any ideas?

Dave said...

Press the number 1 before pressing the clerk button. Quite often after a power failure or even if you unplug the register it will require a clerk be logged in even if you don't use the feature!

See if that works. If not you could do a memory all clear but you will have to re-program.

Don't forget to look here if you need a NEW SAM4s Cash Register

Dave said...

OK does it print out a paper that is blank like it is really running a tape? Maybe you have it printing to the screen and I think that is just an simple anwer yes or no on the report screen, so double check that!

If not let me know with a little more detail

Dave said...

OK Justme, I would love to help but need more detail. First off yes the machine will produce the reports you mentioned. When you turn the key to x or z you can get a menu of reports. If I remember right it is displayed by pressing the 0 or 00 the screen will display the choice.

Don't forget to click here if you need a new SAM4s Cash Register

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the response. When I am in the x report, i choose day, and all - it prints all sales from teh beginning of time ;) it has a from/to option but I dont know what to input here for just the day sales?

Dave said...

OK you are leaving out steps. If you turn the key to X you get a menu from which you have to make a choice. If you choose X reports you can then press enter to display a listing of reports available on the SAM4s ER-650 at which point you can select daily, monthly, one machine all machines etc.

Also keep in mind you can X out any report you want 1000 times a day and it will always continue to report. An X is a read not a report and reset which is what a Z does.

Also maybe from your description you are taking the EJ report? That is a print out of all the days sales as they happen.

Refer to the manual which will show you some examples of reports. You can look here Cash Registers

i want to change a preset program price on my sam4s er650. want to put on a different price. how can i do that.

Dave said...

It is quite easy to change a price on the SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register.

Key to PGM

Follow the menu programming but it should be:
0 to PLU Programming

0 To Add/Modify

Then press the button you wish to change the price on

Press enter to the first price field, enter new price, press enter.

You should then be able to clear/esc out. Turn key to reg and test. Should be the new price.

Please remember us when you need another SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register

Hi. I submitted a question on changing a plu price. The info was very good and very detailed thanks. one more question i need answered. ok i wan to to price a few keys with more than one price and name eg black label 750ml,350ml, etc all with diff prices. I checked the plu program and only one line appears. so i think i have to add memory as well.will have to know how much i will need to add and how, guide me through the methods needed as u did with the other question.

snagg said...

Dave sorry forgot to tell u the machine is an er 650

Dave said...

OK there are several diiferent way to do that. One is price levels but keep in mind Price Levels are one PLU with differernt prices say for example for Happy Hour or Early Bird pricing. In that case it is quite simple
Below I copied right from the manual regarding programming prices. Each of these is a price level and as you can see there are 5.
___________________________________
PRESET Y
PRICE/HALO1 0
PRICE/HALO2 0
PRICE/HALO3 0
PRICE/HALO4 0
PRICE/HALO5 0
___________________________________

However you are correct those levels only show up if memory was allocated. (*see note below)here also is from the book

Up to five price levels are available. (Note that price level fields 2-5 will display only if you allocate memory for additional price levels.)

*If you change your memory allocation now you will loose everything)

So if you are deadset on adding levels you need to back up your register to a pc with optional software unless of course maybe you don't have much programmed yet and in that case you might just start over?

However you could attack this problem with the Mod ke. This changes the pre-set location to another PLU. Example would be the button could be a single can of coke, push the Mod 1 button and now that same key becomes a 6 pack of coke, push Mod 2 first that same button turns into half case of coke. You can have 5 mod levels I think. Big advantage is that you will get counts for each item as a standalone item instead. Below is from the book

Modifier Key: Pressing a modifier key alters the next PLU egistered, either by changing the code number of the PLU so that a different item is registered, or by just adding the modifier descriptor and
registering the same PLU. See "Modifier 1-5" in the "Program Mode Programming" chapter in order to determine how the modifier key will affect the PLU entry.
Modifiers can be:
• stay down so that registrations will be modified by the same modifier until
another modifier is selected,
• pop-up after each item to register, for example large, medium or small soft drink,
• pop-up after each transaction to register, for example, toppings of various pizza sizes. See "System Options" in the "Program Mode Programming" chapter to select stay down/popup status.

snagg said...

Dave thank u very much for the info it will me well. I understand everything u said about deleting the memory if i try to change the allocation quantities now. You mentioned the modifier keys, i understand the principals you mention, but i dnt see a key labeled modifier on my register, maybe as you say i do not have a lot program on my register. so unless i can find one or program one then i cant use that system. My key board is set out facing the register and from my right hand side starting at the top and going towards the left five columns and seven rows down. clerk/errcor/void/ns/pfeed/addchk/pagdown/yesno/pageup/tax1/funclk1/@for/plu/clear/level1/funclk2/9/8/7/level2/check/6/5/4/staffdsc/subtl/3/2/1/%2/cashnenter/./00/0/%3/ Bear in mind that i bought it second hand from a small restaurant. if its dnt have a lot of programs in it then maybe i can do what u said about reprogramming. I dnt have the sortware so maybe i can go in the program and right down all the y and n and things it has in the program so i can redo it all when i am finish. sounds a lot of work but can be done. Tell me what u think and how, if i need to add the modifier key or is it under an other name i dnt recognize.

Dave said...

Yes that is a key you have to add. I think they are added in the service mode. You can even access a list of function keys. It sounds like that function would work the best for you and save time.

Hi i have a er 650 in our restaurant and want to know if I can void items off table bills without it showing up? Also is it possible to void without it showing up on daily Z reads?

Dave said...

OK regarding voids and showing or not showing up on Z reports. No there is not a way to void an item off a guest check without that amount showing up in the void totals.

Can you void items off a guest check without them showing on the guest check? Yes in that case I think so, however those items will still be reported on the Z out for the day.

Tell me what you are trying to do? Do you have a bad server that is voiding items after collecting but before closing the check? That is a common ruse however if they are voiding it will still show up. But again tell me more and I'll see if I can help.

Dave said...

Justin I would think that yes something was started and not finished. Make sure you can turn the key to register and do a no-sale to make sure. If you can do a no sale then go back and try to take the report. If you can't do a no sale then you are in a sale or function you have not finished.

Well could be that you have the option selected to print to the screen not the printer? If you have a 650 or 650R it uses thermal paper so no not a ribbon issue. Check the screen when you take the report. If you use a macro key it will follow whatever was done manual before. SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register

Function keys #103 to 110 are all charge 1 through charge 8 and would all work. The quick keys are called macro keys and are function keys #136 to 145. You then program the macro keys to what you want see page 227 in the manual. They are pretty easy to program. If you do not have a manual where have them on our main website available for free download.

Dave said...

Amy I would perform an Init clear. You probably just have some junk in the machine after the power outage.

The initial clear function allows you to exit any register activity and return to a beginning or
cleared state. Any transaction that is in progress will be exited and totals for that transaction
will not be updated.

To Perform an Initial Clear:
1. Turn the power switch located on the right side of the register to the OFF position.
2. Turn the control lock to the PGM position.
3. Press and hold the key position where the SBTL key is located on the default keyboard layout.
4. While continuing to hold the SBTL key, turn the power switch to the ON position.
5. The message "INITIAL CLEAR SERV". will display momentarily when the initial clear is complete.

Page 18 btw. If that does not fix the problem there are other issues that could be worse.

Hi Dave, i have a register ER-650/650R at work, my coworker lost the Z Receipt and money taken out of the register, therefore we dont know how much money was turned in and need to know for out month end budget, is there a way we can re-print the Z Report from the previous day?

Dave said...

Sorry to hear that. No after the register prints a Z report the information is no longer in the register.

However there are a couple methods you can use to get at least some gross numbers.

First the Non-Resettable grand totals (NGT). You can take the NGT and from known Z tapes and do the math and come up with your missing amount.

Anther way is if you take monthly Z2 reports you can take the monthly report back out the known Z1 tapes and you will be left with the missing day. However if you don't take Z2 on a regular basis that would not work!

Hope some of that helps.

Hi- I was wondering if there was a way to reprint a specific receipt# at a later time (same-day transaction). I know you can press the ENTER key immediately after to reprint the last transaction.

Dave said...

Could be a couple things causing that. First of course is that the front display has gone bad. Not common but I have see a few times. If that is the case you will need to replace the front display which is cost effective if the rest of the register is in good shape. Before you do that however check the contrast dial on the right hand side of the SAM4s ER-650 cabinet near the front. I have seen people turn the dial by accident and loose the display. So check that out first. If not then yes chances are you need to replace the display

Dave said...

In regards to the questions "Hi- I was wondering if there was a way to reprint a specific receipt# at a later time (same-day transaction). I know you can press the ENTER key immediately after to reprint the last transaction."

The answer is yes given the right programming conditions. So you already know how to reprint the last receipt. To get one from earlier if you are not using the guest check feature which it does not sound like you are (or you would already know how to re-print an order) you would have to use the Electronic Journal (EJ) which does not reprint just one transaction but rather prints an audit report of every transaction line by line so you could recover the receipt you are looking for. The EJ must be set up in advance in order to work. You can print the EJ to the printer or the screen.

Unless someone thought about the need for an EJ when the register was set up there is a good chance you don't have the abilty. Look in your reporting and take a EJ report and see what you get. Fair warning if you did have the EJ set up to caputre info you could end up with a 10 foot long report!

No it depends how long in storage. Perform an init clear or maybe even a Ram Claer (you will loose and programming). But you may need to check the battery and make sure if it is still good if not it will need to be replaced and then re-programmed.

Pretty simple you just overwrite the existing clerk names. Look on page 158 of the manual. We do have the manual available for free download on our website if you do not have it.

Hi Dave,

I am going to buy the ER650 second hand used for cafe. However, this cash register is used for retail. what things should i consider before purchasing them?

Thanks

Dave said...

I don't like the 650 for retail because of the flat keyboard. The 650R is designed for retail as the 650 is for food service.

The reason I don't like the flat keyboard for retail is that 10 key on a flat keyboard is not as easy as it is on a raised keyboard. If the sales volume is low probably not a big deal but in a high volume store you will hate it unless you are bar code scanning everything.

So yes it will work and is a great machine just thing about the keyboard

I am sorry, I think i was not clear enough for you. What I mean is that this cash register at the moment is used for retail and I am going to buy this and use for my cafe. Is there anything i should consider before buying as i dont know anything about this cash register. I mean about the software from retail to hospitality function.

Thanks a lot, i hope this time is much clearer.

Dave said...

The ER-650 is a great machine for a restaurant. Yes what you should consider is if you will need/use the following

1. Kitchen Printer
2. Guest Checks
3. Choices on Kitchen Printer (if using one)
4. How many items
5. Will you need memory? Yes if lots of items/checks
6. Intergrated Credit Card?

Also I would perform a memory all clear and start from scratch on programming the 650 for use in your restaurant. Allocate memory first thing!

hi I have a er 650 and am having some trouble programming it. i wish to set the MOD LEVEL 1 key and PLU63 on the keyboard as a button which i can press to add manual prices to PLU orders.

Also, i think i may have done something wrong in the programming, when i select a few digits on the keypad and then press sub-total in register mode, it states invalid entry.

My third problem is this, on the receipt, I wish to make my restaurant title more bold and bigger than the rest of the wording.

Can you help with any of these problems? thanks.

Dave said...

Question:

"hi I have a er 650 and am having some trouble programming it. i wish to set the MOD LEVEL 1 key and PLU63 on the keyboard as a button which i can press to add manual prices to PLU orders."

Answer: Not sure I understand question? Are you trying to make PLU 63 open? You can program a PLU to be open or pre-set. Open allows you to enter a price.

Question: "Also, i think i may have done something wrong in the programming, when i select a few digits on the keypad and then press sub-total in register mode, it states invalid entry."

Answer: Yes correct you can't just press digits then subtotal. You will get an error. What are you trying to do with that?

Question: "My third problem is this, on the receipt, I wish to make my restaurant title more bold and bigger than the rest of the wording."

Answer: Yes you can program the alpha characters to be double sized. On the 650 alpha keyboard there is a button DC (I think or close to it) which means double sized characters. Must be pressed before every letter you wants doubled. Please keep in mind it takes the space of two letters now and plan to take that into account.

hi
could you please help if you can how you download the data for NLU and the associated PLU key from ER 650 pc utility to the ECR
Thank you

Anonymous said...

thanks very much, the first question i said was slightly wrong, what i meant was i want to set plu 63 and the plu to the left of it as a function which can multiply a set of numbers numbers, for example, say i entered a plu and the person wanted something exra, in a hurry i would enter the price manually and then press sub-total, if the person said i want 2 instead, i would just click that function key and the price i entered would be multiplied , so if i pressed that function 5 times, the price i entered would be multiplied 5 times. can you please tell me what this function is called? I've owned the er-650 before but i don't remember how the person programmed it.

As for my second question, what i am trying to do is enter a price, a situation i'd do this is the above mentioned or maybe when someone is asking to purchase a drink and instead of spending time looking for the button, i can just enter the price, im sure this should work as it worked fine on my old er-650

thanks.

Dave said...

John sorry that is a bit much for a free blog. If you bought the machine from us we could help you via email. I assume you have the manual? If not I do have that available in PDF. However I can tell you that in almost every case where we help with something like this it is the serial cable. Peoploe buy the null model or just a generic "Serial Cable" and they won't work you need the cable the machine spec's out.

Dave said...

In response to "thanks very much, the first question i said was slightly wrong, what i meant was i want to set plu 63......" Sorry I'm still not sure what you are trying to do? There is a x/time or @/for that will multiply bb QTY @ Plu. Or once you have sold something in an open PLU or dept you can continue to press the button and it will ring up one for each time pressed.

Your second questions sounds like you just need to program an OPEN priced PLU and you can ring any amount you want.

One of our Sr. Techs looked at your question too and he could not match your requested feature to a function on the machine sorry.

It is pretty easy to program the logo message on the ER-650. Check you manual on page 210

From the PGM control lock position menu, press 7 for LOGO DESC . The LOGO DESC. PROGRAM screen displays:
LOGO DESC. PROGRAM
0. PREAMBLE
1. POSTAMBLE
2. ENDORSEMENT MESG.
3. FINANCIAL REPORT
4. CLERK REPORT
5. MACRO NAME
6. DATATRAN

The Preamble are the lines above the receipt and the postamble are of course below the ,main body of the sales information. Get you alpha keyboard out and type it in.

Sure to turn of the receipt on the ER-650 do the following:

You can turn the register printer to an on or off condition. In the off condition transactions
will not be printed, but reports will continue to print, if requested.
1. From the MANAGER MODE menu press 4 to set printing on or off:

You will see on the screen

REG. PRINTING ON/OFF

REGISTER PRINTING
IS CURRENTLY ON

TO TURN OFF
PRESS YES AND ENTER

The REG. PRINTING ON/OFF screen displays. Press the YES/NO key to toggle from receipt on to receipt off. The screen will display the current status. Press ENTER to set the new format.

Note:When the receipt is off, a receipt may be printed after the sale by pressing ENTER after the transaction is complete.

Dave said...

Steve asked "hello, i recently bought a sam4s er-650 for my coffee shop. How can i get it to print my daily sales for the month?"

The answer is a Z2 or a period to date report. See below:

When you take a "Z" report on the screen you will have the following choices

Z REPORT OPTIONS
RPT#: 1 FINANCIAL
1. TYPE 0
0:DAILY 1:PERIOD
2. 0:PRINT 0
3. IRC 0
0:STANDALONE
1:ALL 2:SELECT

Line #1 ask what Type and your choices are 0: Daily and 1: Period choose the 1 for period.

Please take into account that Period is Period to data so not really by month. If the period you take this report is one month then it is one month however the regsietr does not track anything by the month it only knows Z periods. So to use as a monthly report take at the end of each month AFTER you have done the last daily Z of the month!

Hope that helps!

Hi, we have the ER-650 and would like to program it so it can manage gift cards. I know there's an option somewhere for that, but it doesn't explain how to do this in the manual. We have the newest version of the software. We're not sure how to do this and we would really appreciate your help. Thanks!

Dave said...

OK you can add a payment type and a new PLU to sell the gift cards that in most cases you would program as NON-ADD or HASH. So no tracking but when you sell a card your media will show it but not your sales and when you redeem one your sales will reflect it but not your regular media.

You can also interface with integrated gift card if you had the right merchant services like Mercury.

Hi, I have a ER650. How do I set up a surcharge to add say 1.5% for credit card sales?

Dave said...

Math there are many ways corrupt cashiers can steal from any register. If the owner or manager is programming the register well to close loop holes it can be stopped in most cases. In you case the other worker may be using the void or cancel key after the customer leaves which is why they never press the cash button. All the SAM4s cash registers have great controls to catch this and stop it BUT the owner or manager must take action to put those controls in place. It is very sad but most owners will NOT COME to grips of how much money is being stolen from them everyday. Because we are in the business of cash registers we see it all the time and than witness the owners in total shock that a loyal employee that they treat like family has been stealing $1000.00 a month for years! I have seen employess steal 15K a month from busy places! Owners don't put your head in the sand! Check out a SAM4s Cash Register and have it programmed by a pro! It will pay for itself.

You can add a surcharge by programming a discount key to be an open positive. If you are running guest check tracking you can use the TIP feature.

We don't use/need these receipts so to stop it i turned receipt printing off in the mangers menu. But now i cant print checks/tabs, (We need to print checks/tabs whilst held in the tills memory and uncompleted)
So my question is, can you either turn off receipt printing so it doesn't print a receipt each transaction but still prints a check/tab? or, can you keep receipt printing on but not print a receipt each transaction? thus enabling me to still print checks/tabs with the print check button.

Sorry for the complicated explanation.

Many Thanks in advance.

Dave said...

Andy, the receipt on/off will not change the guest check printing if set up correctly. If using the print check function it should print the guest check if the receipt is on or off.

That other receipt you are getting sounds like a journal entry maybe. There are several print programming choices that could make something like that print.

I think the battery needs replacing. I cant FIND the battery, though, and dont see anything in the manual about replacing it. Can you help?

Dave said...

Even if the battery is bad you can still perform a RAM all clear and it should function. It is an easy procedure

1. Turn the power switch located on the right side of the register to the OFF position.
2. Turn the control lock to the SM position one position clockwise from the PGM position.
3. Press and hold the key position where the CHECK key is located on the default keyboard layout.
4. While continuing to hold the CHECK key while turning the power switch to the ON position. The message: "RAM ALL CLEAR SERV." displays on the screen.
5. Press the upper left key of the keyboard, then the lower left key, then the upper right key, and finally press the lower right key.
6. The display will monitor the memory clear process, which takes about 1 minute. When complete, the printer will print the message: "RAM ALL CLEAR OK !". The
SERVICE MODE will display.

Try that first. If it works program the date and time, print a receipt, unplug the register for a minute, plu back in do another transaction. If Data and time are good your battery is still good.

The battery is on the motherboard and soldered on I belive. Not like changing a battery on a remote control!

Dave said...

Michael it is pretty easy. Look at page 113 in the manual. Each machine should have it's own number and I would just go with 1 and 2 with 1 being the primary register. Use store 1, the from should be 1 the two should be 2 in both machines and retries 3 is fine.

Then try some IRC functions. Now big disclaimer if your machines have different ROM version it may never work. If you got these machines at the same time should be fine but you might want to check!

Hi, I have a sam4s 5200M. I sometime want to cash for items that are not on the program or just cash for one of the item a little cheaper than registered on the casher reg. How can I do this.

Dave said...

Dickson if I understand your question you want to set up an open item so you can ring in prices different than your pre-set prices.

You can use an existing key or set up a new one. When you do the programming you would set up this item as OPEN. Or you could go into programming and set up an existing item as open and pre-set item.

If set up correctly your items should all be PLU's. You would set up or make the change required to be open in program 100 on page 99. Look at the data for N1 you will see you can set the PLU to Pre-set and also to be able to over-ride the pre-set (which allows you to enter the price) If you look at page 101 you will find the description for all the choices in program 100.

Hope that helps. The ER-5200M is a great machine.

I have a Samsung er-650 cash register and trying to figure out if it is capable of tracking our "free" loyalty drinks. At our coffee shop like in Starbucks you buy 10 drinks get one free. Is this possible??

Dave said...

The ER-650 really can't track that. Best bet would be to add a Datacap and do your credit card processing on it and add a no cost gift card service. With the gift card service you can run a pre-paid plan instead of a buy 10 get one free. You can offer (we have quite a few customers doing this) buy a $20.00 pre-paid card and get $22.00 loaded on it, or whatever premium you give them. Maybe the more you buy the higher the premium.

Mercury has a no cost gift card system that works great. You can call us at 1-800-863-2274 and we can help you get it set up

The packet that has the crystals (that comes in everything) was slimy and corroded (Think from the staple it was stuck to ). And, I read on a previous post about changing the batteries, but have no idea how to do that. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You charge the battery just by plugging in the machine. The slimy silica pack does not sound good at all? I have unboxed hundreds of 650registers and have never seen that.

Perform the Memory All clear page 103 in the book. After that turn key to Reg and try it out. If still the same you have a problem, however I have seen the Memory All Clear fix the garbage on the screen and keyboard lock ups before.

So no tracking but when you sell a card your media will show it but not your sales and when you redeem one your sales will reflect it but not your regular media."

Can you explain a little more on how to program the Gift Cert Received so it doesn't add it to the cash/check/credit?

Dave said...

Ok the simple answer is found in this part of the answer "your sales will reflect it but not your regular media"

You still need to create a new payment key for Gift cards redeemed so the totals will not be in your cash/check/credit totals.

The important part is that you don't get the sale of the gift card and when you redeem it both in your sales reports.

You could also sell the card with the R/A function which only increases media totals and than ring it up as regular sale when the card is redeemed, however you will still need the new payment key to track it as media.

If you want tracking you should upgrade to Mercury Payment Systems with their free Gift Card program.

Hope that helps

Looking for a little help. I am trying to program things into groups. Our store likes all the break outs of PLUs (shirts, pants, etc) but the bookkeeper only wants it grouped as clothing. I set up the groups as follows: Group 1 - Mops, Group 2 - clothing, Group - 3 shoes, Group 4 - Housewears, etc. Then, I set each to the appropriate group while programming the plus. When I went to print the group report, it didnt work at all. It put everything into group 1. What did I do wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dave said...

Well there are a couple things that could be happening. But first let's look at how it should be set up. You should have a group programmed as Clothes for your bookkeeper and link the correct PLU's to that group. You are already aware that PLU's can be linked to 3 different groups for this very reason. So you would also create groups for Shirts, Pants etc. and sounds like you have done that. Of course now you link the PLU's to the two groups you are looking for.

Now pay special attention to the group programming and I think this may be your problem. In the group programming there is an option to add to Group totals. Why? Well for your example exactly! So if you still want a sales by group total that is accurate you would have your sub groups (pants, shirts, etc) NOT report in the Groups sales reports total. they will still show up in the report but will not be in the total.

My PLU Lookup1 key is for various quantities of cookies. When I print the keyboard template, it prints PLU LOOKUP1. I'd like it to print "COOKIE" How can I change this? Thanks in advance. Mike at The Silly Yak Bakery & Bread Barn, Madison WI

Dave said...

Silly Yak that could be a couple things. First what are you using to print the template? Some polling and programming software? Or just a word doc? Most folks use the Word Doc. If just the word doc you just need to click on that button and change the text, color etc and re-print

Dr. Dave, The Silly Yak uses the software CD that came with the 650. I use it to update prices, add UPCs, etc. It has an option to Print the Keyboard Template. Knowing that, if you have an idea, I'd still like to know. BUT ... your idea to build "cells" the same size with word.doc (excel.xls too?), then I might give that a try.

Dave said...

OK Silly Yak I know what you are using however i never use that so I'm not certain what to do. But here is a better option use the keyboard template we have on the website for free download. You can edit text, color etc on every key space

Dave, to quote a very popular expression, "YOU ARE THE MAN!" Thanks for the template. I will use it ASAP at The Silly Yak Bakery & Bread Barn. The DQ next door to us also has a 650, so I'll let that owner know your secret. Thanks again!

Thanks Yak.

Dave,
I have a 650 and recently purchased the inventory software for my laptop. I can't seem to get the software and the register to "talk" to one another. I have double checked the serial port communications settings on both the register and software, but when I try to retrieve the data from the register I am receiving "failed" messages. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Dave said...

Two things to check. First where did you get the cable? NO it is not a stadard serial cable!!!! I argue this point all the time! Get the pin outs and make your own cable or buy one. We sell them for $30.00 and we custom make each one. When someone tells you it is a standard serial cable they have NO IDEA what they are talking about. Second you mentioned laptop and so many no longer have a serial port and people try to connect to usb with a usb to serial cable which of course does not work. Must have USB to serial adapter and then the correct serial cable. 9 of 10 times these are the problems. If you bought the software from us call and and I'll confirm these things however we almost never sell the software without the correct cable. If you did not buy here make the prople you bought this from fix this. Should take them 2 minutes or less to trouble shoot this.

My cash register also did the Same thing but it wasn't from a power outage. Was workin properly but all of a sudden it just went into training mode. I've tried the intial clear function but it still doesn't work. When I turned my machine back on to reg mode after the initial clear it still says "training mode" and "closed" on the reg mode screen! I need help!!

Dave said...

If the init clear did not work that is a bad thing. First check that you did the init clear correctly. The closed part just need a clerk logged in even if you don't use clerks. You should also turn the key to X and see if you can exit the training mode. If all that fails you can do a memory all clear, however that will wipe out your program.

hi dave, Id like to get monthly Z report and I don't know how to do it.for.I need to get april, may, jun, july monthly Z reports please help me

Dave said...

The monthly reports, which are really Z2 reports are pretty easy if you are taking your daily (Z1) manually. If you use a Macro could be a little more difficult.

First we need the address that you need April, May, June, July reports. The term monthly report is a little miss-leading. It can only be monthly if you take it on the end of the month, if you miss that data it just continues to add up. So if you take now it will be from the last time you took the Z2 report until now. If you have never taken the report ever it will be from day one of using the machine to know. Z2 or monthly is really period to date!

To take the report at this screen use 1 for period.

Z REPORT OPTIONS
RPT#: 1 FINANCIAL
1. TYPE 0
0:DAILY 1:PERIOD
2. 0:PRINT 0
3. IRC 0
0:STANDALONE
1:ALL 2:SELECT

Select 1 for period instead of 1 for daily. That is it, however remember it will be from last time taken to right now, not by the actual months.

Have the SAM4s and need a report to show all my sales by PLU for past months/years. Is this a pipe dream or can I acquire such a report and if so can I do it via a Mac?

Dave said...

Well you could be in luck for some of what you are looking for. If you have not been "Z ing out" the PLU's the data is still there. It will not be broken down by months or years it will just be there. Z reports in cash registers are grossly miss-understood. They are really period to period, even the daily reports are only daily reports if you take them every day!

So have you been taking PLU reports? Many people only take a general report and never touch PLU's and in that case yes all your sales will be there by PLU from the last time a PLU report was taken. If never taken they will all be there from the day you started using the register. If you have taken PLU reports you still have the Z2 reports you may be able to use.

As for MAC pretty sure the answer is NO.

Even if you had software the Z reports do not change. If you did poll on a daily basis with a PC then you will have lots of flexibility with date ranges, but if not it is too late!

Can you please tell me how I can hire you? I really need more detail and I think a blog might not be the correct venue.

Hope I am not being too much of a pest, but can you tell me how to print to a PC? I saw the answer to Ducks Point and understand the cable sitch, but is that it? Do I need to buy software? Thanks again.

Dave said...

Yes you will need software to print reports at the PC. We really like the PC Poll software for best results.

Hi Dave,
I have the ER-650 and I am unable to delete PLU's it comes up with 'PLU delete error!(report)
Not sure what to do next?
Many thanks

Dave said...

On deleting PLU's can you provide more detail when you get the error? You mentioned something about a report? Which procedure are you following? Where in the procedure do you get the error? What does the error say?

I have er600 and have programmed the buttons and preamble but my thermal printer is just printing symbols and question marks. Help?

Dave said...

Probably the baud rate is wrong or another setting to do with the comms. Could be the cable? Did it at some point work?

I have a samsung and sam4s er 650 cash registers, 3 in total. Occasionally when I push the error correct button, the items still get sent to the kitchen printer. However on the register printer it shows that minus off the bill. It creates a problem because the kitchen makes orders based on what is printed on the kitchen ticket. The strange thing is that it only happens occasionally and I cannot get it to duplicate the problem when I try, it is just random?? Any ideas, it happens with all three which are in different restaurants....

Dave said...

Hmmn...well these type of problems are very hard to track down when they only happen every once in a while. First thing to look at is what version of ROM your registers are running, however ROM's on the ER-650 are difficult to change in the field. Second maybe you should remove the error correct and just use the void button? It will be a few more button presses but it may fix it.

Are these old machines? Let us know what ROM version (which you can find in the service mode) and then we will have an idea of age and if worth the while to upgrade?

The new machines that have replaced the ER-650 have flash ROM so now easy to upgrade as needed from time to time.

Hello, We have three ER-650 registers. I found a PC utility that allow you to change the register program on a PC and down load the new program to the register. I read one of the register programs into my laptop. Reworked the program changed the memory allocation in the register and the utility program and downed loaded it into one of the 3 register. The register reported all the down laded segments successful and complete. On the register printer and the laptop. But the keyboard keys have shifted around and don't function as programmed.
What am I doing wrong?

Dave said...

I think maybe that you should check the store setting and see if you have selected a 650 or 650R and make sure it matches what you are working with. You can move departments and PLU's between 650 models and 650r models but not the keyboard. Check that first!

I have a er650 and my no sale key and my error key and couple plu keys stopped working. I have to push something else and error it and hit it again to open the register. I was told to replace keyboard but how do you do it?

Dave said...

A keyboard replacement is not difficult at all. You can call our office at 1-800-863-2274 and order the keyboard. After receiving it you will want to unplug the register from power (not just turn off, make sure you unplug the register) Open the cabinet and separate the register and you will have access to the keyboard which is attached to the main board with a ribbon cable. Replace with the new one and plug the register back in and turn on. Should work just fine if that was the problem in the first place. Programming SAM4s cash register

Hi Dave. We have a Samsung ER650. I see in the manual I should be able to hit Cash/Enter to get a duplicate receipt and had enabled multiple receipts. I can't get the second receipt. Is it a fault or is there another place I need to go to set it up?
Thanks

Dave said...

Codfathers it needs programming first. It is either in system options or print options. You will see selection for "allow multiple receipts" change that to yes and then after a sale you can press cash and another receipt will be printed.
