SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register

I really like the SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register and ER-650R Cash Register. The ER-650 is designed for restaurants the ER-650R for retail stores.

You will not find an easier cash register to program then the ER-650 or ER-650R register. The reason is the LCD display that makes programming and reporting on this machine menu driven. I have programmed this machine many times without opening a book. Just turn the key and follow the directions!

Lots of options also make this a popular machine. The ER-650 or ER-650R can have Barcode Scanning, Integrated Credit Card, Scale, PC Interface, Coin Changer, Kitchen Printer, Kitchen Video, and DVR interface. However this machine only comes with 2 serial ports and none can be added. So keep that in mind when looking at options.

A couple knocks on this model is that they can not share a kitchen printer, or credit card interface. So if you have three machines in your store and need Itegrated Credit Card you can indeed do that but you need three Datacaps (1 per machine) as with larger SAM4s registers can share 1 Datacap.

By the way the SAM4s ER-650 and ER-650R is the same as the Samsung ER-650 and ER-650R. Samung never made the machines just sold them. They were always made by SAM4s who now market directly.

Hi Dave, i get a over consol buffer error. How do i get rid of it.

Thanks,

Dave said...

So I would need to know what you were doing before this happens. It could be one of several things causing it. One thing that causes it is linking a PLU to itself and it causes the machine to create this error. So let us know what you are doing when this error appears.

The SAM4s ER-650 has been retired however there are still parts and support available for it. The SPS-300 series replaced it. There are three registers in the 300 series

SAM4s SPS-320 cash register is the closest replacement but the SAM4s SPS-340 is the same machine with both a receipt and journal printer while the SAM4s SPS-345 is a retail version of the machine with a raised keyboard and receipt and printer.

Hi, we have an ER-650 till, I changed the keyboard layout quite easily, but none of the open items I've added to NLU buttons will work, they just error. All my other items with set prices I added work fine, but none of the open items. I have a few old buttons which are open items and they still work fine, but they appear to be set the same as my new buttons which don't work. Any ideas gratefully received.

Dave said...

OK, I think this could be a very easy fix. I think in the PLU programming you will find that they are programmed Preset and not open. P1 in the PLU programming will ask Preset Y or N and the default is Y so if you did not change that to a NO your PLUS will not work as open.

Check that and I bet that does the trick

i have followed the instructions for updating the pricing but even after doing this when i go back to reg the price remains at the old price. Why would it do this?

Dave said...

Couple things possible with your problem. You do have to press enter after changing the price to go to the next line before pressing escape, otherwise your programming will not be saved. Or it is possible you are not changing the correct item or maybe the correct price level? I would hazard a guess that you are not saving your work.

Hi there! I can't figure out how to create a new percentage off or dollars off discount key. I also need to modify existing keys. Is there any way at all you can assist with this.?? ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks soooo much!

Dave said...

Lisa, it is pretty easy to program the ER-650 discount buttons.

From the PGM control lock position menu, press 5 for FUNCTION KEY. The FUNCTION KEY PROGRAM menu will appear.

Press the discount key and the discount programming menu will appear.

Select your choices and make sure you press enter after last item you change.

If you don't have the buttons on the keyboard you can add them

At the SM control lock position menu, press 6 for Key Assignment
programming. The KEY ASSIGNMENT screen appears.

PUSH BUTTON TO BE PROGRAMMED.

Press any key location. The current key assignment is displayed:

Enter a new key code from the list of "Function Key Codes" on page 110 and press ENTER, or press PAGE DOWN to display a list of key codes on the screen.

Press ENTER to save the changes you have made, or press ESC to exit without saving changes.

The printer will print out a receipt showing all the changes made to the keyboard.

Hello there Dave!
I am trying to install a TM-88III onto the com port 1 of the ER-650 and I have followed the manual and even made the DB9 and DB25 to RJ 45 adapters for it with the pin out config from a Dealer. But when I run the HW test function to test the RS232 the display says NG? Why or what am I doing wrong to make the register/terminal not recognise the remote printer? I would appreciate any help you might have on this.
Thanks and have an Amazing day,

Robin

Dave said...

Robin, what are you asking the TM-88III to print? Kitchen orders, guest check? It may be that you are just missing some of the settings. The port settings are pretty easy but there is more involved depending on what you are trying to accomplish

Hello there Dave,
I have a customer and we are trying to install an Epson TM-88III thermal printer onto the serial com port. I was given the correct pinouts for the DB25 to RJ45 and the DB9 to RJ45, but we cannot get the register to recognize the remote printer? We want to use it as the primary receipt printer. In the HW test config of the register it keeps telling us NG? Can you please help with this one it would be much appreciated.
Have an amazing day,

Robin

Dave said...

Robin, pretty sure you CAN NOT make that printer the primary or even a secondary receipt printer on the ER-650 cash register. You can make it a guest check printer, you can make it a remote printer (kitchen printer) but not just a receipt printer. You would have to start a check with each sale and close and print that check with each sale and it would work. Could be more trouble then it is worth. Our company offers tech support for a fee. Should you decide to set up in the way I mentioned I have techs that can walk you through the set up. 1-800-863-2274 however charges will apply.

However why are you trying to make it the primary receipt printer? Is the cash register printer down?

Hi Dave,
I have an ER650 (approx 9 yrs old) and after completing a sale the key was turned to X but no report could be generated. A message stating PLU Invalid appeared and now nothing works. The screen is blank. Can't get the drawer open. Push any key and the same error comes up. Help - its in the middle of lunch. Thanks. Lloyd

Dave said...

Lloyd, that could be a number of things and most of them are not good at all. I doubt it would be an easy fix. You can call the support line at 1-800-863-2274 and they can trouble shoot for a $50.00 fee which may fix it, however the fee is charged whether the problem is solved or not. At the age of that machine could be simple as battery but program will be gone

To use the delete PLU's you must first perform the Z1 and the Z2 for the PLU's you wish to delete. Try that first and then try and run the delete function again.

OK, maybe a little more information is required. Do these PLU's in question also have the same PLU#? If so then you have the same PLU placed on multiple spots on the keyboard, which is possible. Or are you scanning these items with a barcode scanner? In that case I assume they would have different UPC numbers and in that case you simply need to re-program the correct description for each. Lopez G, the 650 can issue a duplicate receipt. First your register must be programmed for it. It is in the system options to allow a duplicate receipt or not. Once turned on the pressing the cash key again will produce a duplicate receipt on demand.

Yes it is, however with the 650 you have the option of price levels or keyboard levels. You can program level 2 for the amount less the .50 and either lock it down or toggle to it. Or if you prefer you can use a discount button and pre-set it for -.50 or use another PLU and program it negative for -.50 and that would work as well. so several different ways you can make the changes

I recently purchased a restaurant with a samsung er 650 cash register and it turns on fine but I cant get the keyboard to do anything. The previous owner says it should beep when you press the buttons. Any suggestions?

Dave said...

Hi Lana, well we need a little more information. What is being displayed on the screen? What mode do you have the key in? When was the last time this register worked? Has it been in storage? If so how long.

Bottom line this is a very good and popular register. If you can get it working with a small investment it is well worth it. We offer trouble shooting support via phone for a fee and also training and programming help. Call us at 1-800-863-2274 if you wish to arrange help. Think I have it all set, will find out Saturday as this is the first week to use it. If not the accountant will be after me when he runs the report for the week :).
When I print a daily Z rep. it comes up fine i.e shows sale amounts then discount amount by clerk but at the end just shows Grand (gross) amount. Is there any way to show gross and net. Gone all thru the print options but don't see anything for it.
Thanks for all the help, will be calling for 2 new reg. after the first of the year for new addition :) :)

I don't think so, tell me which report exactly you are running ie All PLU, Clerk, Financial? I don't think any of them will but let me know and I'll run it past a tech for you.

Sorry I have been out on the road the last week or so. The reports you are taking won't show a net. Does not matter which way we set it up, pretty sure it will not. Now if you took a range report of PLUs and included the HH PLU that deducts it will show a net.

Hi, i just bought a used samsung er-655 register. When i first fired it it had nonsense all over the screen. Did an initial clear and a memory clear, both of which worked ok as printed out on the receipt roll. Since then, when i turn the key, the mode won't change. If I turn the key when the machine is off power, it willopen to the mode the key is on, but keyboard won't work at all, except for paper feed button. Do you have any idea of what can be wrong?

Dave said...

Well you took the right steps in troubleshooting this ER-655 for sure. They keyboard should have responded at least during the reset because you have to press each corner. I suggest first doing the memory all clear again.

Besides that need a little more detail about machine, last time it worked, has it been in storage?

To change prices on the SAM4s ER-650 turn key to the programming mode, go to PLU programming, edit/add touch the PLU to change, fill in the blanks and save, Pretty easy for sure. Programming SAM4s cash registers

Hello. Our PLU memory is full so we want to delete the ones that were put into the till in 2013. Is there an easy wy of deleting plu's? Does the till have to be linked to a pc?
Thanks

Dave said...

Yes you can delete PLU's you must first Z1 and Z2 the PLU. After that you can delete them. If the PLU is a keyboard item you can't delete it, must replace on the keyboard first, Z1 and Z2 rule still applies.

How do you delete a single item from a check after it has been serviced out on the ER-650?

Dave said...

Andrew, you open the check and do a regular void and it should remove the item. You could have removed the void function all together in which case you can't. You may also have limited it's use in system options and that could be stopping you.

Jan excellent question however the answer is no. While the SAM4s ER-650 does support multiple tax rates it taxes the entire item not just a portion of it. I would like to know how other people there tackle that problem. I think in Canada where the have PST and GST they came up with a Harmonized tax rate however the problem was easier than yours. Sorry could not be of any help.

Hello. We have an er-650 that is stating financial reports whether daily or otherwise are an 'invalid entry'. Any ideas?

Carl, if the register works fine otherwise it is operator error. Maybe you use a macro key to do the report and it has changed? Do the report manually via the screen and confirm if it works or not. We are available for support for a fee at 800-863-2274 and if the register works otherwise we should be able to correct whatever steps are wrong in just a matter of minutes.

There is also a great replacement for the SAM4s ER-650

You can buy the software from National Business Systems, also known as the Cash Register Guys. 800-863-2274 and that software will also be a big help when you upgrade registers because you will be able to convert your old UPC's for the new register you will need one day. The SAM4s SPS-320 cash register makes a great replacement

That could be any number of things however first and foremost it sounds like it has lost it's program. Would require some trouble shooting to assess what has happened. Could be simple could be serious. We do troubleshoot over the phone for a fee. You can call us at 800-863-2274 to arrange the troubleshooting for a fee. We do not help anyone at no cost unless they bought the register from us, but keep in mind we do and can help with SAM4s Cash Register trouble shooting and support

Hi Dave, I have a sams4 er650. How can I get a z-report from 7-26-17. We do an z-report everyday, but we lost this one. Thanks for your help.

Dave said...

James, sorry it is gone. Once a Z has been taken it can not be reproduced. It will be in the Z2 file of course, however lumped in with all the other days. If you take a Z2 on a regular basis you can take that, subtract each known day and get some rough numbers for the 26th. Or go backwards through the NRT for the gross numbers. That sounds like a heck of a lot of work! Sorry and wish I had better news for you. When you are ready to upgrade The SAM4s ER-650 was replaced by the SAM4s SPS-320 which is a great cash register with several great upgrades over the ER-650

I had 2 ER 650 registers connected and did reporting via IRC. Even when only one register was used, everything worked fine as long as they were connected to each other. I have now disconnected Register 2, and while I can see X reports on the screen, they will not print, nor will Z reports. The screen flashes back to the "Report" screen immediately when I choose "Print". I set the IRC option to "Stand Alone" in the report menu, but no luck.

I have set the IRC mode to 1->1, but also no luck. Any ideas? Is it possible to turn IRC off completely?

Dave said...

It is possible to remove the IRC function completely. Even without doing that you could switch to standalone reports only. I would think you just have a setting off in the report is all. We still offer phone support for that register for a fee. 800-863-2274 or you can look into the replacement for it which programs and operates exactly the same SPS-320 replacement model for the ER-650

Unknown said...

Hi trying to change price on sam45 followed all the procedures still shows old price

Dave said...

You are maybe not pressing enter (cash) after changing the price. If not that then you have a level switched on perhaps? Change all the level prices too to test that. Could be a real issue but very unlikely, it is probably operator error. We do off support for a fee if you need. We also offer the replacement for the ER-650 cash register

Rohit, that is an odd warning. Does your register work otherwise? If it does it just sounds like operator error. Is it working in every other mode exactly as it should?

Wayne, that could be any number of things starting with a bad keyuboard. Those keyboards are still available and very easy to replace, however could be bigger issue too. With that old a machine I would not invest the money to be honest. Time to up grade to the SAM4s ER-650 replacement or call us at 800-863-2274 for information on the replacement.

We had no issues programming before but all of a sudden the registers don’t recognize each other. Any tips would really help! Thanks in advance!

Dave said...

It is probably the cable. Did you change any programming? If not I would really lean towards the cable. You should upgrade while those machines are still working enough to perhaps get a back up from. The SPS-300 series replaced it and is just like it for the most part with a bigger keyboard, receipt and journal choices and SD card slot. Great improvements on an already great machine. Call us at 800-863-2274 for info on the new one or to troubleshoot the ER-650 (for a fee).
