Free Tablet POS system vs the cash register

We have now looked at a lot of tablet systems and other software based POS systems but really feel the cash register still has a great place in the small to medium mom and pop business. sure the POS system will do the job but do you need to use a hammer when a fly swatter would do the job?

Even with the so called free Tablet POS systems, do the math is anything free? A free tablet POS system locks you into a long term merchant service contract. Do you think they are really giving you the best rates? Or do you pay a monthly support fee for your FREE Tablet POS systems?

So before you sign you life away with a free POS system check out a SAM4s cash register and see if it will fit the bill.

SAM4s ER-650 replacment

SAM4s SPS-300 series cash registers
SAM4s SPS-300 series cash registers

The SAM4s ER-650 was a great cash register. It was one of the best selling cash registers SAM4s ever made. It has been replaced with the SAM4s SPS-300 series which consist of 3 models. The SPS-320, SPS-340, and SPS-345

One of the huge improvements to the 650 in the 300 series is the fact they added an SD card port, added models with receipts only, receipt and journal, flat keyboards for restaurants and a raised key version for retail stores.

Like the ER-650 the 300 series can be integrated with credit card payments with the use of a Datacap Twin Tran, also PC interface and kitchen printer interface.

If you have a ER-650 with data in it and want to transfer directly to the 300 series you can't do that. However with software for both machines you can salvage some of the data. If you need help selecting the right machine give us a call at 1-800-863-2274

Cash registers versus Tablet Point of Sale systems

We have seen a large increase in the number of Tablet POS systems on the market. That is not a bad thing, however whenever you see a boom it is surely to be followed by a bust. I think there is currently too many Tablet systems on the market for all of them to make it long term.

With Tablet POS systems there are several different business models for the end-user to choose from. The first is the monthly subscription based model where you pay $30.00 to $100.00 a month every month for a cloud based system. The next options is the free tablet POS system where you have to use a certain credit card provider in order to get the system for free. You have to ask yourself is anything really free? The third and best option is to buy the system out right. Many Tablet POS systems will not sell you a system, they will only let you make payments or force you into a credit card company. So if you use your system for five to seven years like most you could pay a heck of a lot more for that type of system.

I think cash registers might still be a better choice for most people. Easy to use, durable and cost effective. Cash registers have a lot to offer that did not exist before. You will find they now have credit card interfaces, gift card interfaces and more to offer.

To help wade through all these choices give us a call at 1-800-863-2274

Select the right cash register for your business

cash register

Often we receive phone calls from people that are having a hard time figuring out their cash register they bought elsewhere because they did not consult with a cash register company before buying one. We have seen people buy registers too small for what they are doing or too big for the volume a store is doing.

Often people just make assumptions that all cash registers can do all things. Many people think cash registers can interface directly with standalone credit card machines, or that they can be polled over the internet.

So don't buy your cash register at a big box store where you won't be able to get support when you need it, call a cash register company for help selecting the right machine at 1-800-863-2274

How does a cash register work

When you use a cash register in your business it has tools built into it to keep your money secure, many people don't know this. The cash register was invented to stop pilfering from happening by a bar owner in Ohio who suspected he was being stolen from by employees.

A couple simple and overlooked tools a cash register provides for support are as follows: The Non-Resettable Grand Totals and the Z counters. These are both very much like an odometer in a car. They simple count how much was ever sold through this cash register and how many Z reports have been taken. Why are these items important you might ask? That is an excellent question.

First you must have a strict rule that receipts must be given for a sale, the cash drawer should be closed in order to make a sale, and remove the no sale key feature from the register. All of this make it much more difficult for a cashier to fake ringing up a sale and pocketing the money. If you make it easier for a cashier to help themselves to money chances are those tempted are going to.

After you have made it more difficult to fake ringing up a sale pay attention to the Z counter on your end of day Z reports. They should only count by 1 for each Z taken. For an example lets say the z counter has been counting by two instead of one. This is an indication that the register has been Z'd out without your knowledge and you never received the report. OK so you may be thinking yah so what just more paperwork for me and my employees would never steal right, they are like family. Well a Z counter counting by two means that they are running part of their shift, Z'ing out the register and keeping all of the money. Then they operate like normal for the rest of the day.

I have seen this happen dozens of times with my own eyes while helping clients figure out where their money has been going, why their sales have been dropping etc.

If you are lucky enough to stay in the retail or restaurant business long enough it is not a matter of if but rather when you are stolen from.
