Cash Registers are still a better fit than Tablet POS systems for most small stores

Tablet POS systems are all the rage right now and some of the hype is real, however really take the time to look at the numbers. When you calculate the total cost of ownership I think you might find a good cash register system a much better bargain.

A top of the line cash register that is programmed and set up could cost you about $1500.00 plus or minus. Keep in mind that is a turnkey system, take it out of the box and start using it. Some systems could be several hundreds less. Now lets apply a decent lifespan to that system. In my experience I see systems lasting five to seven years all the time. Maybe some repairs or support along the way, maybe not. But just for kicks lets budget $500.00 for repairs and support along the way.

So for a cash register system a five year cost broken down by year including $500.00 for support is $400.00 per year or $33.33 per month. Carry that out to seven years and the cost drops down to $286.00 per year or only $23.81 per month.

Now lets look at a Tablet POS system. The average system is $49.00 per month for the software, plus the cost of the hardware $1149.00 ( I looked at many bundles plus the tablet) and lets factor the same $500.00 for repairs, replacements along the way just as with the cash register system. So for 5 years your total cost is $4589.00 which is $917.80 per year or $76.48 per month and please keep in mind you never own the software. Bump that up to seven years and it changes to $5765.00 total or $823.57 per year which is $68.63

As you can see a cash register is less expensive to operate and it is something you own and you don't need to continue making payments. With the Tablet systems based on subscription you never stop paying, your data is stored in the cloud and your business is dependent on a rock solid internet connection.
