Sharp continues to make some of the best cashregister on the market today IF YOU BUY THE RIGHT ONES! Sharp makes two lines of cash registers. They make the XE line up which are sold through the big box stores like office depot, costco etc. beware of those machines they are not high quality and you will get zero support. If you bought one take it back and then buy a commercial grade machine from the ER or UP line which are only sold through dealers with a support staff.

You will pay more for an ER model or UP model cash cash register but you can get help when your sales tax goes up or you need to add an item. The help may or may not be free but it will be available. We turn away people with XE registers almost every day don't let that happen to you!

Wireless Kitchen Printers

We often are asked about wireless Kitchen Printers and if we reccomend any of them. the answer used to be no but we have recently tested and begun selling a bluetooth adapter that works great with SAM4s Cash Registers and Kitchen Printers. We have not yet tested them on Sharp Cash Registers but I don't see why they would not work as well as the SAM4s registers.

Cost about $250.00 for the adapters plus the cost of the printers. This is often less then the cost of installing cable in a difficult situtaion.

OK the real name of those great cash registers that used to be named Samsung is SAM4s not SAMS cash registers or anything else. Their models begin with ER, SER, or SPS like the ER-650, the SER-7000 or the SPS-530

Now lets look at the Sharp models. It is just plain old Sharp not Sharpe Cash Registers or Sharper Cash Registers. Models start with XE, ER, or UP however XE is the consumer line NOT the commercial line. STAY AWAY FROM XE MODELS UNLESS YOUR STORE IS SMALL AND YOU DON"T DO MUCH VOLUME!

Do SAM4s Cash Registers Support Graphic Logos

Yes many SAM4s Cash Registers support Graphic Logos instead of just the standard text logo. You will need black and white or monochrome artwork and it needs to be pretty small. You will also need an interface cable that does not come with most machines and the utility software which is often free but not often included in the register box.

SAM4s SPS-500 Series Model Numbers Explained

The SAM4s SPS-500 series has four different modole numbers depending on the style of keybaord and printers. Here is how the model numbers work

The 20 in the model number means that machines features both a receipt and journal printer. If there is a 30 instead in the number then that machine has a single 3 1/8th thermal receipt printer. The FT models have flat keyboards for restaurants and the RT means Retail or raised keyboard better suited for a store that enters prices or UPC's at the register

Tax programming on the SAM4s ER-5215M

I helped someone on the phone yesterday program the tax rate on his SAM4s ER-5215M cash register yesterday. Pretty easy task when you have the programming manual. But here is a quick guide to programming tax on the SAM4s ER-5215M cash register. In this example I'm going to set tax rate 1 at 8.5% in a simple flat rate tax NO GST and NO VAT like most states sales taxes are set up. If in doubt make sure and check with you state department of revenue of the rate and type of sales tax you should be collecting. Check with your own CPA or bookkeeper as well!

OK here goes

Key To P (program mode)
Enter 8.50000 Press "Tax Shift 1" Press "Cash"

Your done, make sure and turn the key out of P to R and test!

Couple quick notes lets say you wanted to change Tax Rate #2 not 1 then replace "Tax Shift 1" with the "Tax Shift 2" button if Tax 3 then use Tax Shift 3, if tax 4 then use Tax shift 4. Pretty easy huh!

If you tax was 8% your first entry would be 8.00000 or 9.25% it would have been 9.25000 again pretty easy huh!

Keep in mind THIS DOES NOT MAKE A DEPARTMENT OR PLUS TAXABLE IT SIMPLY SETS THE RATE. You must program the tax status of a group or PLU to make it taxable or not and that is a different post!

SAM4s ER-180T Cash Register

If you are looking for a new cash register but you just want a simple multi department register that charges tax, computes change, has a few PLU's and give you a report at the end of the day and again at the end of the month then you should look at the SAM4s ER-180 and the SAM4s ER-180T both great machines and very affordable. While there are a few little differances between the two the major differances between the two is one uses a thermal paper printer and the other an impact.

SAM4s is the only register company out there coming out with new models and features while the others seem to be shrinking back and not doing much.

Taxable discounts on a cash register?

Common question we get on Sharp Cash Registers and SAM4s Cash Registers is how to make the total sales taxable after the discount. So as an example the business owner wants the cash register to charge sales tax after a discount like this $10.00 sale with a 10% discount and you want to tax $9.00 not $10.00

So you program the discount key to be taxable YES TAXABLE that was it reverses the tax that would have been charged. So if you have a 10% tax the sales tax on $10.00 would be $1.00 but you apply a discount of 10% that is taxable the discount will be $1.10 so your gross sale will be $9.90

Hope that helps! Works the same rather discount is based on percentage or dollar amount.

What is the differance between a SAM4s ER-5200M and an ER-5200?

The answer is not much! The M version was released a few years after and replaced the ER-5200. The reason being is that Cash Register and Credit Card interface was really taking off at that time and SAM4s replaced several models with the "M" version that allowed integrated credit card.

The register is the same cabinet, keyboard, and drawer. The display is different because the "M" version has a 2nd line to accomadate credit interface. The printer is also different and the "M" version uses dual thermal printers of 2.25" in size. I think with the exception of the interfaced payment functions the machine operates and reports exactly the same and you could even use the same manual regardless of model.

Programming the SAM4s ER-5200M Cash Register

The ER-5200M is a great register that is pretty easy to program. Following is some help on programming the tax rates for this register.

Straight Percentage Tax Rate Programming

When tax requirements may be met using a straight percentage rate, use the following method to
program a tax as a straight percentage.

Programming Straight Percentage Tax Rates and Status

1. Turn the control lock to the P position.

2. If the tax is a percentage rate, with a decimal. (0.000-99.999). It is not necessary to
enter preceding zeros. For example, for 6%, enter 06.000 or 6.000.

3. For the type of tax:
If the tax is a percentage added to the sale (normal add on tax), enter: 0
If the tax is a percentage value added tax (VAT; calculated as part of the
sale), enter:2

4. Enter 0 here for all taxes, unless if you are programming tax 4 as a Canadian GST. If tax
4 is a Canadian GST, enter the sum of the options below:

OPTION VALUE = SUM

GST (tax 4) is taxable by rate 1? Yes = 1 No = 0

GST (tax 4) is taxable by rate 2? Yes = 2 No = 0

GST (tax 4) is taxable by rate 3? Yes = 4 No = 0

5. Press the Tax Shift key for the tax you are programming.

6. Press the CASH key to end programming.

Below is an example of a tax rate of 8.8% NON GST regular sales tax rate

We get a ton of questions from people looking for cash register manuals. First off if you cash register is older the 8 years it is very un-likely there is a downloadable manual avauilable on-line. I know of registers still on the market today that does not have a downloadable manual available.

I have been in the Cash Register Business for a very long time and have seen quite a few companies come and go. So here is the information I have about Cash Register Companies still in the USA and doing well and companies that as far as I know are no longer around at least in the USA. (Again this is the best of my knowledge and I could be wrong)

Sharp Cash Registers - Still doing well and introducing new models. I don't think they have nearly as many dealers as they once had.
SAM4s Cash Registers. - Doing great and I would consider them the Market Leader in the USA
Sweda - Long gone as far as I know.
Omron - Pretty sure they stopped selling Cash Registers in North America
Sanyo - I think about 15 years ago they stopped selling Cash Registers in North America. They may still be selling in other parts of the world.
TEC - Still selling in the US although I doubt for much longer but I could be wrong!
Uniwell - I think they still have a limited presence in the US and Canada
Datasym - Still around although I think a shadow of their former selves.
Royal - I think they are still pumping out entry level low cost registers through mass merchandisers.
Swintec - I think they are still around
Casio - Still here for sure but I don't think they are a big player any more however they are also into the mass merchandiser marketing which real dealers do not like.
NCR - The original Cash Register Company I could be wrong and I know they are a huge player in High End Computers and the High End POS world but I don't think they make Cash Registers any longer for the traditional market place.
JCM Gold - I think that they are still out there but not positive. I would think twice about buying one!
TOWA - Long Gone as far as I know
TCA - Pretty sure they left the market 20+ years ago
MKD - RIP

Now this is not to say that there are not supplies still available because in most cases I think there is. Again don't take my word as Gospel on these companies this is just what I pick up from being in the industry and getting calls from people that own some of these older machines.

In 2011 I think SAM4s and Sharp Cash Registers will be the leaders of the pack much like 2010. Between the two I think SAM4s has the lead as being the best when you take Cost, Features, and options into account. SAM4s seems to be more agressive in bring new models and features to market. And just like 2010 in 2011 the best places to buy your new cash register remains the same

Please check back as I envsion some new models being released this year. Maybe not from Sharp but I expect big things from SAM4s again this year

You should really buy your SAM4s Cash Register from an official dealer not just a mass merchandiser on the web. There are several good discount dealers on the internet that deal in cash registers and can offer support. You may or may not have to pay for that support but it is available. When you buy from some ACME internet reseller they may not know a cash register from a candle stick! If in doubt call the reseller and talk to them. Do they know about the cash register you want to buy? Is their business selling cash registers? Can they provide support?

Often we get asked about the limits of the SPS 520F or SPS 530F. Keep in mind that to max out UPC’s or PLU’s you have to have the max allowed optional memory. Even with the max memory we still could not tell you how many UPC’s or Guest Checks you could have because the memory is shared much like a computer. A computer’s hard drive is sized by GB not how many items it can hold this cash register (like most) is the same. However with the maximum memory installed this machine can have a lot of UPC’s andPLUS and guest checks.

According to the factory with maximum memory installed you can have up to: (Remember it is shared so it does not mean you can have the max of each but rather what the max is of each if enough memory!)

The SAM4s SPS-500 series from is one of the best if not the best selling cash registers on the market today. People always ask me what the difference are between the different models. Below is the explanation

The R in the model number indicates a raised keyboard. This style of tactile keyboard in most often asscoitated to retail stores.
The F in the model number tells you the model features a flat keyboard designed for food service.
A 520 has both a receipt and journal printer and uses 2.25″ thermal paper
A 530 has only one printer which uses 3 1/8″ thermal paper designed for a guest check or large receipt

The SAM4s ER-265 Cash Register is loaded with features and in it’s price range is a great value.

This is a great little machine. I do not recommend where you will be doing a large amount of 10 key entry because of the flat restaurant style keyboard. If you use preset buttons it is a killer machine! Very small and low profile. If you have a busy liquor store or gas station probably not the machine and you should step up a few models.

Yes if you have a high quality SAM4s Cash Register or a Sharp Cash Register then you can add a Datacap device to it and turn your cash register into a credit card terminal.

After you add a Datacap to a SAM4s cash register or Sharp Cash Register it makes credit card transactions more secure, faster, and with fewer errors. The Datacap also will allow your cash register to accept your own private label Gift Card program which is Money in the Bank!

I’m only aware of one product that allow cash registers to become credit card terminals and that is the Datacap devices. If someone tells you your cash register can interface to a standalone credit card terminal they do not know what they are talking about.

Yes that is a bold statement but take a look for yourself and I think you will become a big fan too. My company has been in the Cash Register Business for over 30 years and we have never sold such an incredible machine as the SAM4s SPS-500 series of cash registers.

The SPS-500 series is made up of 4 models The SAM4s SPS-520FT or also known as the SPS-520F and the SAM4s SPS-530RT or also known as the SAM4s SPS-530R The first difference between the models is that the 520X has both a receipt and journal printer and the 530X has only a single 3 1/8" inch receipt tape. So the SAM4s SPS-500 series of cash registers is the most powerful and easy to use register we have ever seen. If you are looking for a cash register you can not go wrong with a SPS-520 or SPS-530.

There are two models because the SPS-520RT or the SAM4s SPS-520FT comes old school with a receipt and journal paper tape, and the SAM4s SPS-530FT or SPS-530RT include only a receipt tape printer.

Both are available in a raised keyboard for retail stores or a flat keyboard for restaurants. POS system or Cash Register?

So congratulations, you are about to open a new business and are facing hundreds if not thousands of decisions that need to be made quickly.

So let me help on this one. Should you use a cash register or POS system? Well lets get a few things out of the way first. Rather POS or Cash Register the first job of either of these is still security, second is efficiency.

Another big factor in this decision is whether your business will be owner operator or will you rely on managers and other employees? If owner operator a cash register will often make more sense then an expensive POS system. You are there all the time, you are running the cash register so why not use a simple register!

However owner operator or not, if you plan on keeping a real inventory, tracking in and out and what should be on the shelf, do not try and use a cash register. If someone tells you a cash register can do this, well technically they are correct, realistically they are DEAD WRONG! If they are telling you that, it is not real world, it is theory! How do I know, well it has been our family business for 30+ years! We have seen everything tried! And tried a few ourselves until we got tired of hitting our heads against the same brick wall. So to summarize YES a cash register and software combo is capable of inventory control, but would you choose a hot air balloon to travel across the country or a commercial Jumbo Jet? Both will get there, but only one is efficient!

Be real with yourself about keeping inventory or not. Yes it is possible, yes it is a good practice, yes it takes 10+ hours a week if not more for most small stores! We have had thousands of small stores as customers of the years and we have seen it all. Most of these thousands did not keep a live inventory, and a handful did! We have had successful customers from both schools of thought! Bottom line here is be real with yourself. PC based or Register Based inventory takes time each and every day or week, a computer does not equal magic!

Myself I would do an inventory system if possible but again IF POSSIBLE! If you decide on an inventory control system first buy a computer/software based POS/Inventory control system like Keystroke, or RMS for retail, or Digital Dining if a restaurant. Next step you will need to set aside 20 to 40 hours of your time to plan your work and work your plan. YOU WILL NOT INSTITUTE AN INVENTORY CONTROL PROGRAM DURING THE COURSE OF BUSINESS! Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and carve out the time to do it before you are in the trenches of the retail or restaurant battle!

OK inventory is not for you, you just want to ring up sales by category and have the register compute tax and change and a daily report of what you sold right. Should this be the case with you opt for a commercial grade cash register like those from Sharp or SAM4s. Using a cash register does not mean you can't have security or good record keeping because you can. Should you decide on going home or heaven forbid go on vacation make sure you are following some basic security principles found in all decent commercial grade cash registers. Cash Registers are seen as Old School by some people but they may want to re-think their view of this business staple. Yes Cash Registers can be cheap and not worth much more then a glorified cigar box! But that is not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about commercial grade machines that make running your business easier, faster, and maybe more profitable.

Yes, Cash Registers can help make your business more profitable. Still all these years after the Cash Register was invented it's primary purpose is still for security and helping stop the relentless thieves posing as cashiers steal from you! Yes I know that would never happen to you! I know I hear it every day and every time we show a business owner how a cashier has been stealing from them. You are different right? Your cashiers are like family right? Your cashier have been with you forever right! Well often they love you like family and have been there forever because of the lavish salary you have been paying them without your knowledge! Yes you have what we call silent partners! They partner in the cash in your register! However they are no where near when you risk everything you have to start the business!

How might a cash register help you stop theft? Well there are many simple steps you can take.
Here are just a few of the steps that almost every Cash Register Made can help you with.

Pay attention to your Z counter. The Z counter is a consecutive number that prints every time your cash register is "Z'd" out for the day!
Pay attention to the non-resettable grand totals, again printed with every Z.
Turn off or take off the No Sale Feature of your Cash Register
Set your register to not work with the cash drawer open
If you can make your cashiers do a blind drop instead of letting them "Z" out the machine then do it. Let them "Z" a machine they make the cash match the "Z" and keep the rest!
Look at and investigate your void totals from the "Z"
Maybe eliminate the Void feature
If you take Credit Cards then integrate your credit card payments into the cash register and get rid of your standalone credit card machines.

The list goes on and on but those are some of the tops things to keep in mind! My Dad and I have been in this business for over 50 years combined. If you are not being stolen from yet it is a matter of time not a matter of if.

IR-90 Ink Roller for Sharp and Samsung Cash Registers

I hear all the time that the IR-90/91 ink roller is becoming more difficult to locate these days. Well I know where they are still available and will be for years to come.

The IR-90/91 is a very common Ink Roller used in Sharp Cash Registers, Samsung Cash Registers, SAM4s Cash Registers and Casio Cash Registers. They can last for awhile and of course it depends on your volume. They can be stored for awhile if you take care to keep them sealed and out of direct heat of course.

Never try and re-ink one of these, it will ruin the roller and more likely ruin your cash register printer. They don't cost that much so don't try to save six dollars and re-ink one. Throw the worn one away and replace it with a new factory inked one.

So we get this question often about who makes the best Cash Registers. There is no one easy answer. However if you break it down a little more there are some clear winners.

If you ask who makes the best entry level cash register that has some features but is easy to program then I would have the say the SAM4s ER-650 and ER-650R is the best register on the market. Strange name for a great line of cash registers. Some people still ask for Samsung Cash Registers and end up getting a SAM4s register. Well that is because they are one in the same. Several years ago Samsung for what ever reason decided to exit the cash register business. However for the years they were in the register business they never made the machines in the first place. They were always made by a company that I can't spell the name of! So this hard to spell and pronounce company continued to make the registers they had always made and develop new models and come up with a name to market them under. That name of course is SAM4s as you may have guessed by now. Sharp vs. SAM4s Cash Registers

I often get this question, which is better Sharp Cash Registers or SAM4s Cash Registers? And the answer really depends on the features you are looking for. Hands down if you are looking for a good cash register that is easy to use and program for retail or restaurant operation look no further then the SAM4s ER-650 or ER-650R cash register. For the price you won't find a better value and a great work horse of a cash register. If you are looking for a entry level machine with an impact printer that is built like a tank then check out the Sharp ER-A320 cash register. The A320 is a down and dirty touch cash register with 10 departments.

What I have found is that both Sharp and Sam4s cash registers are very even in terms of quality and features. However Sharp seems to be a little more expensive in the higher end cash registers and often they require more expensive options then SAM4s.

Most SAM4s and Sharp Cash Registers can have integrated credit card, gift card, barcode scanning and computer interface

So bottem line is that it is hard to go wrong with either brand. Just make sure you don't under buy for the features you are looking for.

Microsoft's RMS Software

Microsoft offers a high end POS software called RMS, which stands for Retail Management Software. RMS differs from Microsoft's POS software in a couple different ways. RMS was designed for multi-unit chains and has an option for consolidated control called RMS HQ software. RMS also offers in-house Gift Card where MS POS does not.

RMS sells for about double what MS POS sells for. The MS RMS can also work with a wide range of POS hardware. The Microsoft Retail Mangement System can have integrated credit card and gift card operations.

The CRG's have a couple RMS complete bundles available with hardware from HP. One MS RMS Store Ops bundle includes a touch screen the other RMS POS Bundle features a standard 15" LCD monitor. Both include a 3 year on-site warranty.

Microsoft's POS Software

Microsoft makes a software called POS (point of sale). It is a very nice retail point of sale system for mom and pop retail stores. It does complete inventory control for those looking for more then just a cash register.

The MS POS system works well even if you don't want inventory control but are looking for a Bar Code Scanning system. Just use POS and forget about inventory. MS POS can also integrate your credit card payments.

The Microsoft POS system can work with a touch screen or standard monitor. Many people prefer MS POS with a touch screen. There are hundreds of configurations that can be used as far as hardware.

Datacap makes several terminals that Interface to Cash Registers from the No Load Twin Tran, The IPTran, The 162ML and 162SL terminals. All of the Datacap terminals require a cash register to operate and will not work as standalones. Every Datacap product uses the printer and 10 Key keypad of the cash register. Depending on which Cash Register you choose to interface the Datacap you will be able to process Credit Cards, Debit Cards with Pin, Check Cards, Gift Cards, and EBT.

Datacap products are only available via Cash Register / POS Dealers and are not available from most merchant services providors. Prices range from $600.00 to $1500.00 depending on which make and model and features required. Some cash registers can share a single Datacap product, which will help lower your start up cost. So as an example lets say you have 4 Sam4s ER-7000 Cash Registers you want to integrate credit cards with. You could use on Twin Tran for all 4 machines via the Cash Registers IRC feature and then add an inexpensive magnetic card reader to each register. Mercury also offers integrated Gift Card as well as Credit Card.

The bottom line on Integrated Credit Card Cash Registers is that it works very well these days and is very cost effective. You can increase your bottom line by stopping the fraud and errors

There are several Commercial Cash Registers available with Free Polling and Programming software. What is Polling and Programming Software you ask? Well Polling means that you can take reports from your cash register on your computer. So you Poll it! Programming is just what it sounds like, you can program the cash register with the software on your computer.

More often then not it is more trouble then it is worth to connect and use UNLESS you have lots of PLU's or UPC to program into the machine. I really like the SAM4s ER-650 Cash Register and ER-650R Cash Register. The ER-650 is designed for restaurants the ER-650R for retail stores.

You will not find an easier cash register to program then the ER-650 or ER-650R register. The reason is the LCD display that makes programming and reporting on this machine menu driven. I have programmed this machine many times without opening a book. Just turn the key and follow the directions!

Lots of options also make this a popular machine. The ER-650 or ER-650R can have Barcode Scanning, Integrated Credit Card, Scale, PC Interface, Coin Changer, Kitchen Printer, Kitchen Video, and DVR interface. However this machine only comes with 2 serial ports and none can be added. So keep that in mind when looking at options.

A couple knocks on this model is that they can not share a kitchen printer, or credit card interface. So if you have three machines in your store and need Itegrated Credit Card you can indeed do that but you need three Datacaps (1 per machine) as with larger SAM4s registers can share 1 Datacap.

By the way the SAM4s ER-650 and ER-650R is the same as the Samsung ER-650 and ER-650R. Samung never made the machines just sold them. They were always made by SAM4s who now market directly.

Sharp ER-A320 Register

The Sharp ER-A320 is one of the best selling and best performing cash registers I have seen in years. Very heavy duty with a Drum Impact Printer, and a metal cash drawer (plastic insert). They are a tank. So if you want a bond printer and don't care about alpha print and can live with under 15 departments the Sharp ER-A320 Cashregister is a great machine.

Sharp cash register have great register features as well but often cost a bit more. One knock on Sharp is that the options cost far more then options for SAM4s do. However Sharp allows their registers to be sold anywhere anytime. SAM4s only allows certain models to be sold by anywhere and make you buy the bigger models from local dealers only!

The Samsung (SAM4s) ER-650 is a great mid level cash drawer. Hands down one of the easiest programming machines on the market. Very cost effective.

Pros:

Cons:

NO Kitchen printer Sharing bewteen machines.

Can not expand past 2 serial ports so only two options can be used.

Tax Programming for the Sharp ER-A530 Cash Register

Turn the mode lock key to the PGM position
Press 2711 Press the . (Decimal Button)
Press the @/For button
Press 1 (for tax rate one, replace with tax rate you wish to program 1 - 4)
Press the @/For Button
Enter the Tax Rate 00.0000 (USE THE DECIMAL KEY. )
Press the @/For Button
Enter the lowest taxable amount. (In some states only amount above the minimum is taxable. So if in your state if anything over $0.50 is taxable you would enter 50, if everything over $0.01 is taxable enter 1)
Press the Cash Key.
Return the Mode Lock Key to the REG Position and test.

Here is an example of the keystrokes for programming tax rate 1 for 8.8% in the Sharp ER-A530 cash register with everything of $0.01 and up being taxable. Remember the key must be in program mode.2711 . @/for 1 @/For 8.8000 @/For 1 CashAnd again remember departments, PLU's,and/or UPC's must also be programmed to charge tax or not.

Sharp XE-A505 Cash Register

The Sharp XE-A505 has been released with a feature not found in many registers. It comes with computer interface software and a bar code scanner. Computer interface software can be added to most ofther machines at a cost of $450.00 to $900.00 and this machine with the software sells for about $450.00 Although it is not part of the commercial grade line of Sharp Cash Register it seems like an excellent value.

Sharp ER-A320 Department Programming

Below is the Sharp ER-A320 Cash Register Department Key Programming. There are several different items that must be programmed concearning the department keys. Following is the most common and crucial.

To Program the Tax Status on a Sharp ER-A320 Register

Turn key to PGM
Enter 2111
Press . (Decimal)
Press the @/For button
Enter the number of the dept key you wish to program.
Press the @/For button
Now fiil in the ABCDEF from the following:
A = For a plus dept enter 0 For a minus enter 1
B = Enter Zero (always no choice)
C = Taxable by Tax Rate 4 enter 1 No enter 0
D = Taxable by Tax Rate 3 enter 1 no enter 0
E = Taxable by Tax Rate 2 Enter 1 no enter 0
F = Taxable by Tax Rate 1 enter 1 no enter 0
Press the #/TM/SBTL button
Press the CA/AT (Cash) button
Start over for the next dept.

So as an example to program department for a Plus dept taxable by Tax Rate 1 for ABCDEF you would have entered 000001
Or to program a department for a Plus dept taxable by tax rate 2 and tax rate 1 for ABCDEF you would have entered 000011
Make sure you turn the key back to REG before testing.

Sharp ER-A320 Tax Programming

To program the tax rate on a Sharp ER-A320 follow these instructions:

With the MA key turn the mode lock to PGM
Enter 2711
Press . (decimal)
Press the @/For Key
Press 1 (see notes below)
Press @/For key
Enter rate. Example if your rate is 8.8% you would enter 88000 as the register will place the decimal point.
Press the @/For key
Enter the lowest taxable amount. Example if all sales $0.01 and up are taxable you would enter 1 if however the minimum taxable amount is $0.25 then enter 25 in most places it is $0.01 and up.
Press the CA/AT key (Cash Key)
Check the print out to make sure the rate is correct.
Make sure and turn the Mode Lock back to REG.

NOTES in step 5 I wrote to enter the number 1. The number 1 in this case is for tax rate 1, the Sharp ER-A320 is capable of 4 tax rates. So enter the number of the tax rate you wish to program. If you needed to program tax rate 3 then you would enter 3 in step 5. If you have to program multiple tax rates just start over after step 10

Sharp ER-2386S Tax Programming

The Sharp ER-2386S tax programming is pretty simple when you have a simple flat rate. Tax tables are a different story, but I don’t think anyone uses them any longer. The Sharp ER-2386S is capable of two tax rates, and yes many states and cities have several different rates. So here are the steps

Turn the mode lock to PGM
Enter 241
press . (decimal)
press 1 for tax rate 1 or 2 for tax rate 2
press the @
Enter the tax rate as 00.0000 so 8.8% would enter as 88000 or 7% would be 70000 DO NOT PRESS THE DECIMAL KEY, THE PROGRAMMING WILL ADD IT IN THE CORRECT PLACE
Press the @
Enter the lowest taxable amount ( I always use 1) so anything above $0.01 will be taxed if a taxable department. If you area is different enter the local minimum amount.
Press Cash (CA/AT) to finish
Repeat for tax 1 or 2 as needed.

Remember to return the key to the REG mode before trying.

Here is how to program the date in the Samsung ER-380. Very simple process:

Setting the Date
The date sequence is Month-Day-Year.
1. Turn the control lock to the PGM position.
2. Enter the date in the format you have selected and press the SUBTOTAL key:
M M D D Y Y @/FOR Subtotal

example

If the date is March 1, 1999, enter:
0 3 0 1 9 9 @/FOR Subtotal
The date you have entered will display and print on the printer:
03-01-1999

Setting the Time
1. Turn the control lock to the PGM position.
2. Enter the hour and minute in military time (24 hour time) and press the @/FOR key:
H H MM @/FOR

Time Setting Example
If the time is 3:25 PM, enter:
1 5 2 5 @/FOR
The time you have entered will display and print on the printer:
15:25

Cash Register to Computer Interface

Many customers of mine want to connect their Cash Register to a PC for reporting and programming. This can be done with most mid-line registers and up. Expect to pay at least $500.00 for the Cash Register and another $500 to $1000 for the software. The software is called Polling software. There are several different companies that make Polling Software. The biggest and best is PC Poll see them at www.pcpoll.com PC Poll makes software for most every make and model of Sharp Cash Registers, Samsing Cash Registers and a few others. The advantage with PC Poll is that the have a Quick Books interface (optional) and with version 7 the can poll a couple models of cash registers with high speed internet.

Sharp Cash Registers are some of the best made registers around. However sometimes that Samsung models have more value. Sharp has been the number one selling cash register in the US for years. This week a customer of mine placed a service call on a Sharp machine I sold her about 15 years ago. That business got more then their money worth from that machine.

If you are looking for a decent 10 department machine with impact printing with R/J I suggest the Sharp ER-A320 register. You can buy it online for $299.00

Thermal Printers vs. Impact Printers

We are always asked which is the better printer between thermal and impact. If you don't already know the differance Thermal Printers use heat sensitive paper and the printer creates the image with heat, impact printers are the old standard using bond paper and an ink ribbon or roller with the print being made by striking the ribbon against the paper with a series of small dot heads.

If I was choosing a register or POS printer I would take a thermal printer most every time. There are still applications where an impact printer is useful, for example a kitchen printer where two color print is needed. But for speed, ease of use, and duribilty a thermal printer can not be beaten.

The cost differance is not much between printers, but the offer all cost of ownership is much lower in a thermal printer. Thermal printer do not have the failure rate impact printers have, and the paper is much easier to change.

Oh but you might think thermal paper is to costly right? We yes you are going to have sticker schock the first time you but a case but there are a few things to remember about the price. The first being you do not have to buy ink ribbons, also there is almost always more feet per roll in a thermal roll compared to bond paper.
